Hello Friends, I have been aggressively seeking a good shutter tester. I need one that can measure curtain travel times. I am trying to find a good "used" unit because new ones from Japan cost over $8000. I have done extensive searches on Ebay, Google & Yahoo for a decent used shutter tester. The couple that are on Ebay right now are old and overpriced, I don't mind that they are older units but the price should be more in-line. I could really use some help, does anyone know of a good unit that's for sale? Like I said I am aggressively seeking this unit so please don't be offended if you see this post elsewhere. Kind Regards, Henry |

I'm not sure where you can buy one, but for $8000 I'll build you one using a photodiode, some electronics, an oscilloscope, and some cables! In fact I could probably build you one for $80! Do you need to do more than measure how long the shutter is open, and maybe how quickly it opens and closes? |

Could you build one with 2 photodiodes, one at the left side of the frame and other at the right side? Could you measure the distance between spikes to get the time of curtain opening? |

Another vote for DIY: Your computer's sound card with a freeware sound editor works almost as well as TWO oscilloscopes. Two sensors in the film gate will give you opening and closing times at two chosen spots. They'll be marked as two nooks on a graph in each of two audio channels, plotted against the timescale. By that information, the speeds should be easy to calculate. My next project will include a led light, fed with a high pitched audio signal as a light source. That will make the graphs easier to read: sound on a graph will correspond to the illumination, silence to the darkness... |

Vasile Florin (Romania) manufactures several models. I have the cheapest one and it works great. http://www.ebay.com/sch/vfmoto/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 -- Dave |

Hank, Check out this link www.papcoinstruments.com this digital tester is a stand alone device, no computers needed. It is battery operated, making it very useful when visiting a camera seller. Characterizing your camera shutters will help you avoid wasting film and processing. |
