I've acquired a very tidy Beauty Beaumat rangefinder with Copal SV shutter, speeds 1-1/500 and B. The shutter speed ring rotates smoothly with definite click stops for the various speeds, but the shutter fires at only one speed, somewhere around 1/60, including the B setting. It looks and sounds fine, but with no variation.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

I guess the speed isn't any particular speed, it's just some random effect of gumming up...
The shutter, if new clean and good, runs by default at top speed. Any setting lower than that includes a hook stopping one part on its way down thus generating all slower speeds. If the lubricant gums up, this hook does not engage and the shutter always runs at one speed: the top speed. However, since the lubricant gums up everywhere, the top speed is no longer 1/500th, but something slower. In terminal case the shutter won't run at all, but since the main spring (driving the shutter) is much much stronger than the springs driving the retarder (the part that makes slower than top speed happen), it's common that the main spring still goes and the retarder fails.

Greets,
Marek

Thanks, Marek, that's a really helpful reply. I may take the plunge and try to clean the shutter.
