One of my most favorite cameras in on the fritz: a 1970s Canonet QL 17. Suddenly, no shutter, just a tiny "click", and no light meter. Replaced battery; same thing. Is it shot? If not, cost to fix? I LOVE this camera! THANKS! |

These are unrelated, the battery and meter have nothing to do with the shutter. A common cause of this shutter symptom is the blades getting stuck together with dried oil, which may not be visible from outside. What I do in this case is unscrew the front element and very gently lift up on the top shutter blade with the point of a sharp sewing needle. If the blades are stuck together, they will come free instantly and the shutter will fire. Once that has happened, dampen the tip of a cotton swab with cigarette lighter fluid and clean the blades through the lens opening. Very gently rubbing the blade surface with a soft pencil leaves a thin coating of fine graphite to prevent a recurrence.
The meter is something else. It could be the wire at the battery box corroding and letting go at the terminal, or a wiring connection, or the switch that turns the meter on when you set the camera to A or the one that connects when you cock the shutter. I'm afraid you'll have to start hunting. |

Rick, THANKS MUCH. I'll try the shutter fix & look into the meter. It's all weird since I use this camera fairly regularly and suddenly it's busted! Thanks. |
