I am about to replace the shutter curtains on my Leica IIIF which look original. The Opening curtain material is rubberised on one side, front facing, whereas the Closing curtain appears non rubberised. The replacement material I am using is rubberised on one side so my Opening curtain will be as original with the rubberised side front facing. My question is should the Closing curtain made with the same material be the same. I have a copy of The National Camera publication "The Leica Type Shutter" which says on page 11 "So the rubberised side of the closing curtain and the cloth side of the opening curtain face the film area." Any views on this would be appreciated.
On pretty much all my Leica bodies it is the same (Opening curtain with rubber side forward, Closing curtain with rubber towards the film) It was done that way so not to overstretch the rubber as it was wound onto the drums or rollers. This should increase the life of the curtains.
