I've seen gun oil or Rem Oil mentioned for relubricating shutter shafts and escapement pivots. Is there any significant difference between these? Gun oil is more easily purchased around here (Vermont). |

Gun oil would probably be fine. You can also squirt an inch of two of WD40 into a pimiento jar (or other small jar) and let it settle. There will be a layer of trash at the bottom...paraffin and other junk...what is on the top will be a nice light oil, suitable for use in all sorts of machinery, including but not limited to wristwatches and cameras. I've had good luck with two gun-related products- Break-Free (like Rem Oil with a teflon suspension added) and US Military Artic Small Arms Lubricant. The latter is a very thin, low viscocity oil that will not gum up, ever, under any contions. Just the thing for Contax and Kiev shutters. It's also pretty good on AKs. Mark P, |

I'd go with the Break-Free. Rem Oil, WD40, 3in1, and most common lubricants, tend to gum up over time. WD40 is famous for leaving a varnish. Singer sewing machine oil and pure mineral oil (like Norton sharpening oil) are also good. |

Rem Oil used straight and sparingly for general lubrication and heavily diluted with Ronsonal, maybe 10:1, for shutter clockwork works for me. |
