This is a general question really, but what are the usual causes of a slow moving meter needle? I have noticed on a few cameras that the needle moves slower than I would expect. Are there common reasons for this such as a corroded wire?

Depending on the meter design, it might be slow reaction of the meter cells, low battery voltage, or dirt.

Or the needle may have somehow been bent so that it now rubs against the focus screen or indicator plate.

Or the bearings on the meter movement could be too tight, or have gooey oil in them. (They would normally be dry jewel bearings.)

I think slow reacting meter cells may be part of it, as Rick suggests. I've noticed that some old CdS meters are slow at first, but get better and more accurate as you use them. I would not worry too much if the meter is accurate and if it returns to zero repeatably.
