Hi !! I just bought a Canon AE-1 at a yard sale. The people told me it worked last time they used it. The only way that you can get it to fire is buy using timed photo. If you turn the off on switch to on it still takes timed photo shots. The flash works, and lightmeter. When I got this camera I removed the top and the tungston wire was broken I replaced the unit with one from another AE-1 and timed it back the way it should be. Can any one help me? Thanks: |

I assume you mean help with the original problem. Check the wire-like contact by where the trip button would hit--it should only contact when the top is on and turned to selftimer. If it's shorted together you will get only delayed release. If you need help with the tungsten wire--you should obtain a manual.
When you remove the top from the camera, the speed/asa dial has to be at B/3200 or when you release the dial the tungsten wire can snap. |

Thanks for the infomation. The wire was already broke I know how to replace the tungston wire assembley. I will open the camera backup tonight. Thanks again; |

Your problem is with the S/T switch to the right of the prism. It is a short exposed wire that is moved by the trim ring around the shutter release button (S/T & lock functions). Note the C shaped metal around it. Just center this wire and rebuild. You should be fine... |
