My new Canonet GIII QL17 is in great shape except for one annoying problem -- the first time I pressed the battery check button (the red one next to the viewfinder), the button got stuck in the down position. It is slightly off kilter, just below the surface, and no amount of prying with a pick is bringing it back up. The blue battery check light stays on all the time, draining the battery. How do I get the black viewfinder cover off? Is it necessary to remove the entire top cover? If I can just pry it off, is there a direction that is better than another (i.e., from the bottom or the top, to keep from snapping off any retaining clips)? Please help. Thanks |

I think you will have to remove the top plate. The black escutcheon surrounding the test button, indicator lamp and rear finder eyepiece is cemented to the top plate on the inside. Any attempt to pry it off from outside will surely crack it. The red button is free-floating and presses against a brass leaf spring contact. I can see no reasons for it to become jammed, unless a previous owner removed the top plate and somehow dislocated or mangled the brass leaf spring contact. Unless others have more experience with this problem than I, removal of the top plate seems to be required. Roland F. Harriston |
