Hi all .
I will give myself a gift, a complete set of Wiha screwdrivers; what do you think is better for camera repair : mm or inches ? I think mm is better, seems that Japanese cameras use screws in mm, I am not sure about German, English and American cameras. I can not afford both sets. |

It doesn't make a lot of difference in screwdrivers, but any cameras other than American are likely to have Metric screws. |

I think it makes a difference with respect to cross-point screws. Metric and the so-called
"Phillips" configurations are different.
Since these types of tools of are not prohibitively expensive, the solution is to acquire both configurations.
Generally, since an inordinate amount of torque is usually not required to remove and replace the fasteners in most cameras, a relatively inexpensive tool set will suffice.
Of course, if one plans to do camera repair on a long-term/professional basis, then go for the best tools that are available, consistent with long life and minimal trauma to the items you plan to repair/service.
Others may have differing experinces and opinions.

I agree that it probably doesn't make much difference whether the set is American or metric. However, I would caution against the use of inexpensive tools. The problem with cheap tools (like the eyeglass repair variety sold in grocery stores) is that they don't fit the screws well. They nearly always mar the heads. I use miniature slotted screwdrivers from a set made by Xcelite, model M60, made for electronics work. Even in a high quality set like that, the philips head driver is too large for most camera work. I use a "Posidriv" #0 made by Paladin for all Japanese camera philips screws. Hasn't let me down yet. |

I suspect that I'm fortunate in that a member of my family travels to Japan, and I was able to obtain several sets of JIS (Japanese Industry Standard)
cross-point screwdrivers.
I believe that these are readily available here in the United States from retailers such as Micro-Tools, etc.

Many thanks to you all ! I will get a metric set. I am not a professional repairer, but I take this hobby very seriously; and I really don't like cheap screwdrivers or philips drivers : they, or damage the screws, or damage themselves, have many useless. |
