Good yard sale day for cameras. 1) is an Olympus XA, in pretty good looking shape, except that the shutter always opens for several seconds except on flash (on flash it works fine). The meter is reading correctly, so I suspect that the camera is either not sensing that the front cover is open, or is not sensing that the back door is closed, but if anyone has some insight on this before I try opening it up, I'd be happy to hear it. 2) a Nikkorex Auto 35 with the mirror stuck up and the shutter, apparently, stuck open. If you push the button, it resets the wind lever, and the wind lever cocks the button, but no other evidence of shutter operation. Reaching into the mechanism with a little probe will release the mirror, but it hangs up again each time, and I see no evidence of a shutter operating. Any hints on what part to open up and investigate first on this would be appreciated, as would any leads on service information, diagrams, etc. I'd also be interested to know just what kind of shutter this thing is supposed to have, and what its operating sequence is supposed to be. |

There is some information on the Nikkorex at the url below. Rumor has it that the camera was actually made by Mamiya, as were several better Nikkor lenses. http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/society/cousins/cousins04-e.htm Roland F. Harriston |

See Tomasy's "Restoring the Great Collectible Cameras 1945 - 1970". The shutter is a Seikosha-SLV, claimed to be similar ro the Richo 500 shutter, which he gives diassembly instructions for. |

Sounds like the ceramic portion of the circuit of the XA has been fractured. Only replacement will correct the problem if so. This entails removal of the shutter assembly from the body, removal of the rear lens element, lifting the end of the main circuit and unsoldering the ceramic portion of the circuit, followed by installation of a replacement ceramic. Not an easy job. |
