I have one of the above lens [#1778xxx] which I believe is the 4th version. It has some fungus growth on the inner surface of the first element. I removed the name ring but this element refused to fall out which I think it is supposed to. I further removed the whole front lens block and knock on the table but the dirty lens is still there. Have I missed anything? How can I get out this piece of glass? Thanks.

Aaron - I have run into similar problems with lenses. Have you tried a lens suction cup?? They actually make these things!! Also see if there is
another retaining ring you may have missed.

On the 1.8's with the serial number on the rear, the front lens group is a self-contained assembly and cannot readily be disassembled.

The 1.8/50mm Zuiko is quite prone to fungus growth between the first two elements. About 30% of these lenses I saw had problems there. As mentioned in the previous post, the front lens group is just about impossible to disassemble - at least I gave up after a few attempts.

You can buy a used lens from KEH for under $30 if your efforts don't pan out.

Aaron. I bought a really nice used 50mm F1.8 Zuiko lens from www.adorama.com for $17.50 a few months ago. Several more were still available at various conditions/prices. Good luck. Don LeRoux.
