I have a Nikon FM with a mirror that goes up but does not go back down. Any suggestions? |

Check to see if the mirror is sticking to the foam in the upper position. Nikon mirror damping foam turns to goo at about the age of your camera. |

I removed that foam as I thought that was the problem but it didn't help. (And it was goo). Any more advice? |

If the shutter is cocked and doesn't trip, you may have a mirror cage problem--this requires major disassembly and it quite involved. |

Thanks for your advice. I'll pursue it. I thought that the mirror was an independent device but my understanding now is that it is directly connected to the closure of the shutter. My shutter is not working either. |
