Hi there I just picked up a ql19e for free. The camera is in minty shape but the shutter wont fire at all. I have powered it up with a battery but it doesn't seem to help. You can here a small click noise within the lens but the shutter won't fire. Any help would be great. Thanks.

chances are the shutter blades are wtuck together with dried lubricant (there isn't supposed to be ANY lubricant on them, but it finds its way there over time). i'm not familiar with the QL19E specifically, and different models present different challenges in shutter service.... but the easiest way to improve this will be to unscrew the front and rear lens cells from the shutter for access to the blades; then lift the top one or two blades carefully away from the others with the point of a sewing needle to verify if this is the problem (if it is, and you do this after trying to release the shutter, it will immediately fire when you lift the top blade.)

if this works, then get some cotton swabs and soak one with lighter fluid and wipe the blades down with it. repeat this several times, cocking and firing the shutter repeatedly between applications, and finally follow up by wiping them dry with fresh swabs until the blades look dry and clean again. this is not always good enough, but it's about as good as you can get without opening the shutter. some dry graphite puffed on the blades at the end can help keep them from sticking again, but if you do this you'll need to leave the lenses off and fire the shutter many times to shake out the loose powder before reassembly - otherwise the inside surfaces of your lens will become covered with graphite particles and it won't look very pretty (though it will work okay)

The shutter of the Canonet QL19E is fully electronic and as such fully battery dependant. It is the precessor of the Seiko-ESF shutter of Minolta's Hi-Matic E. Before any repair attempts to the shutter make really shure that the shutter is supplied with power.
