Hello

I know this topic has been discussed before but I hope somebody has an advice for me too. I have bought a Canonet GIII ql17 and have discovered that the lens is a bit loose. I can "wobble" it a bit (approx. 0.1 mm) from side to side.

I have peeled back the letter and checked the 4 screws and they where all tight. I have then unmounted the lens and removed the "black box" behind it. It seems that the "wobbling" is between the "gold" colored (3) and the "silver" colored (2) ring on the back of the lens. See the image here:

Is there anything else that may bee loose or is it just normal wear and tear?
Is there anything to do about it?
Will this small wobbling affect the pictures?

Thanks in advance
Steen Hansen, Denmark.

I have a couple of Canonet 28's with about the same mount. One wobbles, one doesn't. So it may be excessive wear. Good luck.

My guess is that the looseness you are seeing is the result of the lubricant migrating out of the focus helical. Relubricating should at least reduce the amount of movement. I don't think this will create any problems in your pictures, though.

Thanks to you both.

It sounds reasonable to me. What should I use for relubricating? Some thin oil or thicker grease?

I use a white lithium grease. There are also synthetic greases available from places like micro-tools. You don't want to use a thin oil, first because you need the body of the grease to fill the space between the threads to take the wobble out, and second because the oil won't stay where you put it.

Thanks.

I bought some molybdenum disulfide grease recommended on an other place on this site. It is lithium based but it is black. I will try it out and see how it works.

Thanks for help.
