I have two contaflexes, one III and a Rapid. I have taken the lens/shudder assambly apart many times, and have cleaned and luricated the threads for the focus ring many times. I still can't get the focusing to be smooth and easy throughout the focusing range. It seems to bind and get harder at the close up focusing distances.
I've used Remington oil with teflon, sewing machine oil, and castrol 10w40 motor oil all with similar results. Though the rem oil seems to be the best so far. Any suggestions? |

Focus rings generally want grease, not oil. While you can buy special greases made for cameras, you can get away with ordinary grease (like white lithium grease, available at any auto parts store or hardware store). This will generally eliminate any binding or roughness in turning the focus ring. The only caution would be not to get grease anywhere except on the focusing helicoid threads. |

You should try a HEAVY grease. You can find some good stuff at your local gun store. Gun grease (if you pick the correct viscosity) works great on helical threads because they dont thin out in the heat and go in to the aperture mech. If the threade are damaged,remove old grease,apply abrasive compound lika auto rubbing compount and then work the assy until it smoothes out. (I put oil in compound to thin it) Next clean it realllly good with alc. and a tooth brush. When it is spotless, apply the correct grease and rebuild and recal for infinity focus. GL! |
