Hi, Need some guidance. Presently inherited a great Canon F-1, but budget restraints to buy FD lenses at this time. I see that an ebay company is selling the following:
"A new M42 Pentax/Praktica screw mount to Canon FD mount.This allows you to mount your 42 mm screw mount lenses to your Canon FD body.
Note: This will not give you any dedication with metering."
I do have some good screw mount lenses. Should I buy this adapter & keep buying screw mount lenses (great deals on ebay), or save money towards some FD ones?
Also, is picture quality on 4" X 5" print similar or results are greatly different? Thank you for your expertise. |

Thee are myriad screw adaptors for bayonet mount cameras but they remove so much of the attractive, endearing and useful facilities of those cameras that their application converts a fine photographic tool into a makeshift. You would lose the open aperture viewing, the open aperture metering and the auto-iris.
You are right. There are millions of good and inexpensive M42 lenses to be had these days. And there are also millions of perfect match cameras for which they were intended. I would suggest you sit tight and watch out for Canon FD Mount lenses but in the meantime you might find it a workable proposition to pick up an M42 Mount camera body.
As to your closing question - good branded SLR lenses were , and remain, in a very competitive global marketplace. But if your end results are 4 x 5 prints from a Mini-Lab - you probably wouldn't perceive any differences between the output from a Zeiss Planar (arguably on of the world's finest lenses) and the Jena Domiplan (arguably the next rung up from the bottom of a jam-jar).
Just an opinion - and that is what you sought.

Get yourself the Canon FD adapter P. This is for M42 on the FD mount cameras.Plenty around 2nd hand, quality is much better than a lot of eBay rubbish.Dimensions on some eBay adapters very iffy.A good M42 lens will beat any run of mill generic FD any day.Here in UK prices of genuine FD lenses are falling,honest dealers are offering Canon FD lenses at bargain prices at moment.I personally only use genuine Canon lenses in FD but have some very unusual ones in M42 and find no problems with totally manual setting.
At the end of the day it depends on your photographic interests.Landscapes,buildings,macro etc can be handled with stop down metering and manual iris.Sports etc are a different kettle of fish. |

I'd buy FD or FL lenses, they are very reasonable now everyone is switching to digital. FL lenses predate FD lenses and are are used in stop-down metering mode. They are usually cheaper than FD lenses but optically equal. You can also get Vivitar or Soligor lenses in Canon mount. |
