Sean,
As with all of the mechanical SLR cameras the first place to look is on the bottom of the camera. This is where almost all of the charging of the mirrorbox and shutter and transport are living. There are exceptions but with the Minolta line of cameras most of the information is there on the bottom.
If the release button is half way down start by checking the selftimmer to see if it has been activated. Frequently this is a problem. If so recharge the selftimmer, recharge the mirrorbox, unlatch the double exp prevent on the bottom of the camera and try again.
Another fun camera to learn.

Thank you for your input. I was lucky- this camera apparently had not been used in some time and I was able to free up the shutter release with a little coaxing by screwing in a cable release.
