Does anyone know if the Metax and Prestor shutters frequently found on Flexaret cameras are original designs or if they are Compur or Prontor copies? Thanks in advance. |

Prestor shutters were produced by AGC ( Alfred Gautier, Calmbach). They belonged to the VEB Pentacon Group. They produced the Prontor shutters. times are: 1, 1/2, 1/4 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 or 1/750 Sec |

The Prestor is indeed found on (most - a few have Compur-Rapids or Veburs) Werras. It is a very different beast to a Compur or a Prontor, as it has symmetrical blades that rotate to cock. This requires a second, Capping, shutter behind the first that opens when the shutter is fired but not when it is cocked. Go googling - but ignore any suggestion of using powdered graphite in it, or you'll have stars all over your pics for ever! |

ACG was based in Culmbach, West Germany. They did not produce the Prestor shutter and they never belonged to the VEB Pentacon which was based in East Germany! The Prestor shutter was an independant design, very different to Prontor or Compurs. I assume it was produced in East Germany but I am not shure about it. At least it appeared only in the East German Werra cameras. |

Thanks for the Geography lesson, Reiner! I wasn't sure about AGC - I think that the whole camera, shutter and all, was a Carl Zeiss Jena design - but I knew the shutter was a unique design. As far as I know, the only other camera using it, apart from Flexarets and of course the Werra was the Pentina. |

Just a thought... If anyone has any dead Prestor shutters on their hands, I'm looking for parts... Any help would be much appreciated! Adrian |

Hello. I think the metax is a compur copy. At least, it is heavily based on it. Regards |
