Howdy. I acquired a Canon FT QL body and I note that the meter does not react when turning the aperture ring on the lens but does react to turn the shutter dial on camera. Any ideas? I can't find any info on this. Thanks in advance for your input. I am still learning about these cameras.

The Canon FT meters only in the "stop down" mode: when changing apertures the meter will react only if the lens diaphragm is physically closing down (the viewfinder screen darkens as this happens). The meter actuating switch of the FT should accomplish this... if the meter is not reacting to changes in aperture it may be that your aperture blades are stuck and are not closing down when you press the meter lever. This happens when oil from the focusing helical migrates to the diaphragm after a number of years, and it can be cured by having the lens cleaned.
Verify this by setting the lens to f/16, looking into it from the front and pressing the meter lever. If it's working properly you will see the opening inside the lens close down to about 1/8 inch in diameter, and then reopen when you let off of the lever.
You could replace the lens, but chances are it would need the same treatment before long... so you may as well have yours fixed. |

Ah, very good. I understand now. Very interesting...well, to a newbie I guess. lol. This will take some getting used to.  I am just glad everything works as the body is quite good quality. Thanks very much.
