hello everyone, i just purchased a yashica -12 tlr, it will not fire and appears to be advanced? it sat for some time before getting it myself. my question is if anyone would kindly reply is, would this camera be stuck because the battery is dead? do these cameras need this battery to operate the shutter fire? if anyone can help me with this question i would be very thankful . bill |

The battery does nothing but operate the meter needle, it has no effect on the camera functions. It is common for a leaf shutter of this age to need cleaning; I'm sure that's all it needs. As for the meter, it might or might not work when you put a new battery in it. You can guess exposures close enough to do without it, with practice. |

Much more modest that Rick olsen's page but still might be usefull: http://www.rusted.free.fr/ To clean the leaf, use Tricloroethilene or a substitute of that. Tricloroethilene is the liquid that is used to clean the car engine when a Carwash cleans your engine. |

Trichlor is now illegal, at least in the USA; it's also very hard on plastics (not a big problem for a Yashica TLR but it is for more modern cameras). Cigarette lighter fuel is a safer choice. |
