Some time ago I picked up some die cut leather covering for an old Fed 5C. One is sort of a purple lizard skin with self adhesive backing and the other is red without any self adhesive backing. The old leather has been removed, old glue removed and the body is ready to recover. My question is, should I use any sort of contact cement, or something similar for the covering with the self adhesive leather covering, or will the self adhesive backing adhere by itself. I had the directions for it which I can no longer find, and I recall it saying something about using rubber cement near the edges, letting it dry, and then apply the self adhesive leather. Does this make sense? For the non self adhesive leather covering, what's the best adhesive to use. Will contact cement work? Thanks, Harlee |

I have never had to use any form of extra adhesive on 'self adhesive' coverings. For leathers and vinyls without any adhesive backing, I use an industrial double sided vinyl tape. Micro-tools sell a similar product especially for attaching coverings. I find the tape gives a far more durable 'fix' and is much easier to use. Otherwise any good contact adhesive can be used, the type recommended for attaching Formica sheet or similar to work surfaces are best. |

I use a contact cement that it is sold in sparay can. The layers are really thin and the result is great. You have to carefully mask ALL that is not going to be glued. It gets EVERYWHERE. The brand here in France is UHU. Do it on a well ventilated area since this glue, when inhalated, makes appears funny little flying dragons in front of you. |
