I just picked up an Olympus OM-2S which has the following symptoms: LCD display with missing sections and bad illumination lamp. Does anyone has any ideas? Thanks! |

no, beyond the thought that it doesn't sound promising. can you live with it as it is? it won't affect auto or program modes (beyond a bit of uncertainty regarding the shutter speed you're getting) and you might have to use a separate meter for manual if it's bad enough. i advise never using the VF illumination lamp in the 2S anyway: it's a sure way to kill off your battery, which is already the camera's weak spot. |

Thanks Rick for the response. The missing sections in the LCD display are two dots at around 1/15s and all the dots above 1/125s. Therefore practically I have no problem using it at MANUAL SPOT, but at AUTO and PROGRAM settings I have to be careful to avoid over exposing. On the point of VF illumination, if I make an AA battery adaptor described in your website, I should get the little lamp repaired just in case I cannot see the display properly when taking pictures in the dark. ;-) |

I have downloaded the SPT article from the web and worked on the LCD display. According to Troubleshooting point 9 (in page 23), I have lifted the LCD connector from the LCD and cleaned the flex contacts. But alas, when I put the LCD connector back I fail to see anything in the LCD display. Does anyone have experience in dealing with flex contacts? Please help. Thanks! |

Not sure about this particular LCD, but in ones that I have seen the flex connector has about a million little conductors on the edge and it's pressed against a similar pattern of a million conductors on the LCD. Each of these individual conductors MUST mate up with the correct one on the other side, without touching an adjacent conductor, for the thing to work. In automated assembly this is quick and easy, but by hand... well, you need better hands than mine. |

Thanks Rick. That doesn't sound encouraging. I just wonder why the SPT article did not caution readers on this. I thought the flex contacts can really be cleaned, but actually not! |
