I own a Canon Ae-1 with infamous shutter squeak. After researching several sites I decided to take a crack at it. Opened the top cover and pored several drops of oil into the right hand side of the lens mount, as described. Now the camera is completely dead. Meter seems to be working but camera wouldn't release. Does anybody know what I did wrong? Please help!!!! Thanks much Tom |

I'm not sure what happened to your camera Tom, but you may want to try a new battery just to make sure it had enough power to trip the shutter. When the battery goes bad, everything shuts down on these A-series cameras. You may want to check out my post on lubing the mirror gears in an AE1P. It should be the same for an AE1. It can be done very easily from the bottom of the camera after removing the bottom plate, 3 screws. A 5 minute job to remove the bottom plate and lube the mirror gear. |

I have three AE-1P's that had the mirror box squeak problem. I have to say that there is a lot of bad advice out there regarding lighter fluid, 3in1 All purpose oil, slick50, and even WD40. The mirror box takes a light grease on the gears, no less. You must at least take off the top of the camera and apply the grease directly to the gear. If you spray crap into areas you do not see, you will probably damage the electronics. If you are lucky enough not to damage the camera's electronics, then you will most likely do it the next time because...you applied the wrong kind of lubricant. Proof is in my two dead cameras and one live one. I know you probably will ignore my post and try it anyway and be forced to buy another camera. If that is the case....sorry. |
