I have recently aquired an early model Canon FT QL that has a problem. Shutter fires and mirror goes up when button is pressed but will not close (and mirror will not return) until film advance lever is cranked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

On most cameras with the type of shutter on this Canon, it is the second curtain closing which trips the mirror return. Your camera needs to have the shutter bearings cleaned and relubricated. If you search the posings on this forum, you will find a thread which covers this topic - to do the job properly you must remove the mirror box. If you do this, be sure to replace the foam light seals around the mirror box. |

Doug, I had a Nikon which showed exactly the same symptoms. Turns out, it was the light seal rubber bumper that the mirror hits against when mirror is in up position. It was deteriated and gummy and when the mirror hit it, it stuck in up position. By advancing film, the mirror would drop down again. |

sticky mirror foam could cause the mirror not to close, but wouldn't stop the 2nd curtain from closing. |
