I just picked up a mint Hi-Matic E to carry with me into Russia [as a less conspicious camera than my Minolta 500si], but I'm wondering, since the "E" is a completely auto-programmed type camera, how can I use a flash with it. Did Minolta make a special flash for the "E"? It does have a guide number table on the back of the camera with letters that correspond to letters on the bottom side of the lens, i.e., A B C D E, to be set according to the guide number of the flash unit. I believe that when a flash is placed in the shoe, it locks the shutter to a flash synch, but I may be wrong. There is also an "auto/manual" switch on the back marked with a flash sign - Can anyone tell me how to use this camera in flash mode with a standard automatic single contact flash?

Actually the Hi-Matic E switches to a flash mode, i.e. 1/30 shutter speed and aperture selected according to GN and distance setting, when a flash is inserted in the hot shoe.

The Auto/Manual on the flash mode switch does NOT refer to that Auto flash mode you know from modern cameras. When set to Auto the flash is fired only if the camera detects underexposure without flash. In manual mode the flash is fired always.
