I've received a Pentax S1a (a.k.a. H1a) by mail order. Fire the shutter and the mirror goes up but, when the shutter curtains have finished travelling, it stays up for nearly a second before dropping.

Is this is a symptom of something awful yet to come? Or does the camera need no more than a CLA?

I'd really appreciate any advice.

A CLA will do it. There are 2 possible causes, basically: either the mirror is just stuck in the foam at the front of the screen (I don't recall if the S1a even had foam up there), or the closing curtain is having trouble tripping the mirror-down latch either because the shutter is getting sleepy or the latch is getting sticky. Either way, though, a CLA should address it.

Thanks, Rick. The first idea strikes home, because I've had a longer, harder look inside the mirror box and, with a dental mirror, checked the foam cushion strip. Maybe it's become old and a little sticky.

Or it could be the trip from the second curtain is the problem.

Certainly, a CLA would be nice but I'm hoping it's not vital just yet.
