Hi

I have just acquired this lens with a Spotmatic.

Unfortunately it seems that the distance indicator collar on the above lens is slipping and therefore the distance reading taken from the lens is wrong.

It seems to be as if a retaining screw is missing. There is a grinding sound like grains of sand as the focusing ring is turned although this is extremely minimal.

The lens cosmetically and optically is mint. Is it a repair that is financially viable or should I look to replace.

Also can anyone inform me if it is a task that can be carried out by a novice

Darryl,

Here's a website that shows what might be a very similar lens:

http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/7ESrawhiti/pentax50mmf1.4.html

At least you will get some idea on what's involved to take a lens apart. You will need some proper tools, jeweller's screwdrivers, etc.

If you do some Internet searches you will surely find a good deal of information on lens repairs. This forum should also have info in its archives via its utilities search.

If you are mechanically inclined, lens repair is often a lot easier than tearing into a camera. Since you have a very affordable & common lens maybe it's a good opportunity to try to fix it yourself.

Darryl,

The web page I mentioned can be found via Internet search as follows: Chris's camera pages

I guess that pentax link is only good within the website page.

Good Luck!

Darryl,

I successfully flushed sand out of the focusing
ring of a zoom lens with naptha (Ronsonol lighter fuel); no disassembly necessary.
