I have a Electro 35 GS that seems to have either a contact cleaning issue or a the pad issue. When you wind the camera, no thump/click. Shutter acts like it is on B most of the time with battery. Shutter opens and closes immediately when you take finger off shutter. If you hold the shutter button down, the shutter opens and then closes according to shutter times.
So does it seem like I need to clean contacts or is it the pad issue. I just sort of hate to tear into it as it is really pristine in cosmetic condition. |

If you don't hear the Yashica clunk when winding you should check the pad first. Opening the front part of the camera to do this will give you access to the slide contacts, too. |

What I've found interesting about the 'clunk' description is that my two Electos don't make such a sound, but function perfectly and make fantastic pictures in any level of light. When I wind mine, they sound just like any of my other 35s. Am I fortunate, or just hard of hearing? |

Went out to Home Depot in search of neoprene washers for pad material. I found a nice 2" neoprene washer but it is 1.5mm thick. Would this work or should I keep looking? |

I used neoprene of 2.0mm thick for my G and it seems lower limit of the thickness.
The healthy pad in GSN which color is orange has a little more thickness.
It is around 2.2mm.
I don't know about accurate thickness of original black pad for earlier model like G.
Because all those old black pad I saw was melted.
For practical method 1.5mm neoprene and double-sided adhesive tape with 0.5mm - 0.8mm thickness will work.
(Such tape is sold for automotive accessories attachment)

Hello John;
Yashica electro's mechanism generates some kind of noises during catch and release cycle of secondary axis of shutter-release rods.
You can hear a small sound when an arm in the lower cover catch and hold the 2nd axis at depressing of shutter release button.
It is almost same time of shutter blades opening.
You should hear louder sound of impact that means release of the axis when you wind film advance lever.
It is sometimes louder than sound of SLR mirror flip.
The electro's shutter may work even if that catch and release cycle is not working when you press the shutter button gently and hold it enough time for shutter operation.
But it likely to mean pad deterioration.
For the short period workaround it is possible to tweak the adjusting screw on the end of the 2nd axis.
You can see it in the bottom cover.
But it's better to replace the pad before tweaking.

I only hear what I'd call a click when winding or shooting. That said, both Electros will take fantastic pictures handheld, with only a 75 watt light and 400 film. I don't see how the results could be better...even with sound (clunk).
Also, The lights in the viewfinder work as described in the manual.
I have two Nikkormats and a Contaflex, and they make a definate sound when the mirror flips, but the Electos click is nothing like this. The clicks are no more noticeable to me that the click of a Retina II shutter.
I don't see how having them clunk would make them function any better at this point. |

Yeaaa I did get the pad replaced and it cured the problem. I used a x-acto knife to remove the old pad. I then depressed the lever that pops back up and gives you the clunk till it locked at the bottom. I then had enough clearance to slip a new pad attached to a long sewing needle (with glue applied) in the right position and held it in place for a minute or two with the blade of the x-acto knife. Reassembled and now have a satisfying "Yashica clunk" and the shutter timing is working. Credit goes to Jon Flanders on www.rangefinder.com for the tip. |
