Opened the bottom and found the lever which controls the mirror and curtian and when moved it fires. Check batteries and the only conclusion I can come to is the button isn't working.

Light meter lights when shutter button is pressed. Is there a motor that operates the shutter trigger?

No, just a magnet. The shutter button contacts may be dirty.
Tell me, when you push the shutter button does the meter lights go out? They should. If not definitely clean the contacts.
