Hi. I have a Minolta XG-7 that I've owned since new and now, in aperture priority (automatic aperture select mode) the shutter "hangs". I have to turn off the camera to release it. In manual mode, the shutter works fine. Batteries are good. I've scanned and searched this forum for my particular problem, but haven't found it. I've learned a lot though! Sounds like it could be the shutter capacitor, or maybe it needs an aperture ring resistor, or just some cleaning on the contacts.
Anyone have experience with this camera or a similar one? Thanks so much. |

They'll do that, Ralph. I think you'll find it is a problem with the variable resistor contacts or the switch contacts (underneath the top cover). Personally, I'd try the aperture ring resistor under the lens mount first. This is not an uncommon problem. This model used tantalum capacitors, so I don't think that will be the issue. Furthermore, if it is working when not set to "Auto," the capacitor is found not guilty anyway.

Thanks, Jon. Now, given that I have never worked on a camera before, but do have some "fixit savvy", do you think it is something I can tackle myself, or is it better left to a pro?

Well...I think you could handle it with a little help. By coincidence, I have one of these I've been meaning to take a look at--same basic problem, as I recall. If I get some free time tomorrow or the next day, I'll post the steps and we can see what we see.
