I am having a hard time find any kind of plastic screw to replace the broken ones on the battery ground for my OM 1s, any suggestions out there? |

Tim,
Have you any idea of thread size?Have some glass filled nylon stock that I have produced some small BA slotheads from.Also have many small dies,so could easily produce a few die threaded screws-if I have correct die.
Send me details of screws needed.

I think this is a 2.3mm screw (it's bigger than 2.0), about 4mm long.

I think Rick is right - in any event a plastic screw of aproximate dia would self thread on the metal if screwed in gently I should think -I will look at the Toomsey Book, I think he states the exact size - trouble is there are two versions, the ones with metal screws and a plastic sleeve and the ones with the plastic screws - and the dia. are different by a large margen. I have both versions with broken screws- |

Tim,
Another question;Have you room to run a short tap into the original hole/s in plastic screwed version?Just looking at my threading options,but I am sure that I have a 2.3mm die.
Diameter of head will be to standard specs I suppose.However what is the head type?ie pan, mushroom or cheese.I can only produce slotheads but can make them + slots if driver access is a problem.

The original screw is a pan phillips head - i think the head is thicker on the plastic screw than it would be on a metal pan head. there's a fair amount of room around it though, most head types would work.
There's all kinds of room for a tap in there... the hole is a through hole into the film chamber next to the takeup spool.
The clearance hole in the battery terminal is only 2.3mm in diameter, so it has to be a 2.3 screw.... there's not much metal available to drill that hole oversize.

I'm not sure if the following will work but fwiw, I miked the original screw & a 2-56 & unless I missed the measurements, the 2-56 was only about .002 less over the threads. A good hobby shop should have or can get 2-56 x 1/2" nylon screws made by KD, a supplier of model RR couplers. Cut the shank to a 1/8"length & try it. Usually these screws are a bit tight but if not in this case, wrapping the threads w/a strip of thin clear tape or an application of loctite might do it.

You beat me to it!Local model shop has some Tamiya items evidently.As I am going into town on Saturday,was going to have a rummage.Ready made beats fiddly turning jobs any day
KD stuff is very useful,but my nearest supplier is mail order only.So have to work from catalogue.
Use PTFE plumbers tape to increase diameters of loose screws.Does not jam up.

Here's another source of metric screws. www.nwsl.com. They have pan head insulating screws up to 2.0 mm x5mm -- part # 52055 @ 4/95c. Might be a better bet than the KD for an OM application. Again they are a model RR supplier but w/a lot of interesting tools, metric screws ( very good prices ), gears etc. Catalog is in pdf which can take a bit to load but if you're interested is worth looking at. If you have to cut the shank, a jewelers saw if you have it will make a much finer cut.
