I am getting erratic exposure meter reading in my Nikkormat through the lens E/M and I am wondering if there are problems with these FT2 cameras. Is there a way of repairing the meter? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

These are nice old cameras...30 years old! When I get a camera with a flakey meter, I first suspect the battery. If the battery is new, or load tested good, I next suspect the meter switch. Which in the case of the FT2 is the wind lever. If you are lucky, the contacts are just dirty. Turn it off and on many times. If that doesn't fix it you'll need to pull the top cover.
The meter cells on these rarely go bad.

I was assuming that the battery that I took out of the blister pack from a spare purchased at the camera store was suppose to be at full charge. Well “assume” is a word that makes an ass out of me. When I finally got around to it, I checked the voltage with my Multimeter, it was in worse condition than the one that I was replacing which lived in the camera for over a year. Both were below the 1.5 rating. I purchased a new Silver Oxide battery and all is now well.
Yes the Nikkormat is a great camera. It is built like a tank and it will work even without the light meter. With Nikor lenses it comes close to some of the best, in the 35MM camera range, with great image quality at a budget. I only would have liked that there was a through the lens window for the aperture position as well as the shutter speed.
I am wondering if there is a way of replacing the foam that surrounds the back film door. This puppy is over 30 years old now and the foam is now getting gummy. It is just a matter of time that the mirror foam will start doing the same.

Reference your light seals, goto e-bay, Jon Goodman sells light seals on there under the heading " interslice ".
He may be able to give you advice on the best way to replace them. Jon very often posts on this site. |
