I have a Pentax K 1000. Several times I have used it and had this problem (some time it works fine). I load the film according to the instruction manual and advance the film to 1. When I am done I take and rewind the roll... but it is done winding in a few turns which lets me know that it never advanced the film. Sometimes when I am advancing the film it feels like it is stuck. Is there something I am doing wrong or does the camera need repair (if it does what is wrong with it so I can take it to get fixed). Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

the Pentax K1000 seems straightforward enough, but for some reason it is very easy for the film leader to slip out of the slot in the takeup spool as soon as you close the door after loading.

Next time you load it, after you get to frame 0, turn the rewind knob clockwise to take up the slack in the film (if it sounds/feels like it's not attached, be ready to stop short so you don't wind it all the way into the can). Then, watch the rewind knob as you advance to frame 1. You should see the knob rotate counterclockwise as you advance the film. If it doesn't, it's not attached to the takeup spool.

You'd be surprised, this happens to K1000 users even after years of experience.

I've used this camera for years and agree with Rick - it's not the most positive system for grabbing onto the film. I always waste a bit of film and make sure it's made one good wrap around the take-up spool before closing the back.
