I'm using a Canon AV-1. Recently I've noticed an occasional slightly darker vertical stripe on the left side of slides, not every one but some.
It's only about an eighth of an inch wide and is barely noticeable. Do I need to worry/panic? I have had this camera for about 30 years and it has never given any trouble. I probably wouldn't have noticed this minor detail if someone hadn't pointed it out to me. Thanks to all, John.

Can't say for sure, but it does resemble the problem I had a couple of years ago with my Contax RTS, which was giving vertical bands on many though not all photographs. That turned out to be light leakage through degraded light seals. You might want to have a look at them and see what state they're in. If they're sticky, it's time to replace them. It's an easy job, and you can get light seal kits from several reputable sources, such as Interslice (Ebay).

A light leak would cause light bands, but dark vertical bands or edges are more likely caused by uneven shutter movement with a cloth shutter. This will be more apparent at the fastest shutter speeds and negligible at slower speeds, which might explain the occasional nature of the symptoms. Could be a bit of dirt or a film chip in the shutter gears.

Thanks for that Alex and Richard. I'll experiment with different shutter speeds and see if I can pin the problem down to your suggestion, Richard.

Hope you pin it down, though I'd take Rick's diagnosis over mine. It'd be good to know how you get on.

I will post any result or conclusion here. Thanks.
