On several Nikon models such as the FE-2 and FA the back must be closed in order to advance the counter from S to 1, and at the same time moving the shutter speed of 250 to the selected setting. This is controlled by a small tab on the camera back which is depressed when the back is closed. This is all well and good except when you wish to check various shutter speeds with the back open or removed. In that case the speed stays at 250. Does anyone know of or have built some sort of a device to depress the small tab on the camera back?

Thomas Tomosy, the author of numerous camera repair books and seller of test equipment, has made a spring clip for this purpose. You can try contacting him at [email protected]

Thank you, I am familiar with his books, and do not remember about the clip. I will contact him.

It's pretty simple really.
You use a toothpick or similar to simulate the tab.
A clump of Blu-Tak will hold the non-business end of the toothpick in position.
