A canon FTb was just passed down to me. It seems to be in good shape except that the mirror will often lock into the up position without engaging the MLU function. This happens maybe 1 time per 7 releases. Is this a common problem? Is it easily solved? |

Does it behave the same way without a lens attached? Sometimes a sticky lens can make a camera hang up. |

then i'd guess that the mirror linkage needs cleaning... not as easy as swapping lenses... |

Check that the rubber foam buffer strip, along the front edge of the focus screen, is not degrading and going sticky. Degrading foam can sometimes cause the occasional hang-up. |

Well, now i feel dumb... of course, that would be the first place to look. While the mirror is stuck in the up position, try pulling down on its front edge very gently with a fingernail. If it pops right down, it's just sticky foam; email jon_goodman@yahoo.com for an immediate and cheap (under $10) solution. If it resists and goes back up when you let go of it, you have a more serious problem. |

Er, it snaps back up on me if I pull it down. What might this more serious problem be? |

First area to inspect/clean should be the mirror lock-up mechanism. Make sure that degraded foam/dirt are not restricting movement. You could just try working the mlu lever a few times to see if this frees anything up. I had one FTb where just removing the levers, on front of body and replacing them, cured the problem. |

Hmm. I don't think I'm really qualified to reassemble my camera, and I don't feel like paying to have it repaired. I guess it'll be sitting on the shelf for a while. |
