I've just aquired a Minolta Hi-Matic E that doesn't work.

The wind lever is impossible to move more than halfway.

When I press the shutter button the aperture/shutter blades move slightly, but then move back again as I release the button. It never goes "click". Does the E shutter work without batteries? If the shutter blades were stuck I guess I would be able to wind and press the shutter, but there is something wrong here. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi, without batteries the shutter's solenoid will not work. Unfortunately the batteries are of a discontinued type (640), but with spacers or suitable springs to bridge the gaps between contacts any 625 type can be used. Winding is not possible unless the shutter has completed its cycle.

Wernerjb: Thanks, you were right. I popped in two 675 sinc-airs and folded some good 'ole aluminium foil and the shutter sprang to life. Does anyone know how much battery this shutter draws? I'm a bit concerned about using it, as the sinc-air batteries are not totally cheap where I live.

I have read that silver cells will give good results if you divide the ISO setting by 2.

The cinc-air cells are ideal to supply the current peaks the Hi-Matic E draws. The live of these cells in a camera is usually not limited by the current they supply. They just dry out specially in arid climas. In humid Norway they should rest for several month.
