It depends somewhat on which lens you have, but there are some sketches here http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-81.html that show how to get the lens apart. Once you have the core out of the barrel as shown in the top sketch, you should be able to reach a fair amount of the focus threads on the inside of the barrel, and at this point you can clean the hardened grease out of the threads with lighter fluid and cotton swabs, work the focus back and forth to expel some of the old grease and solvent out of the inaccessible part of the threads, and once all you can see is clean, relubricate with lithium grease and work it back in the same way. This should be enough to give a substantial improvement. If it's not enough, you can go ahead and disassemble the focus threads as shown in the lower sketch, being careful to mark the position of everything before you disassemble (digital photos help here). However, getting this back together right is more involved than just reinstalling the lens into the barrel, so I would try the easy part first and see whether you feel like it's necessary to separate the helical. |
