You can buy an excellent reproduction of the Canon service manuals for the "Barnack" Canon rangefinders from John S Craig (http://www.craigcamera.com). But, more tutorial, and very relevant would be Tomosy's Leica Camera Repair Handbook, and the National Camera repair manual on the Leica IIIc. Other than the very well designed (and patented) flash sync circuitry, the Canon IV is pretty much identical to a Leica IIIa, but with a cast shutter crate. One key difference is that Leica, starting with the IIIc, put adjustable cams on the second curtain release lever for the 1/500 and 1/1000 shutter speeds, making the tolerances of gluing the shutter curtains on the drums less critical. Canon didn't do that, the factory must have used precise jigs for locating the curtains. We mortals have to resort to trial and error... |
