Well, I finally got hold of my first ever OM camera body. It exhibits the apparently frequent stuck mirror/advance lever problem and there doesn't seem to be any current flow from the battery box so I am trying to remove it to investigate continuity. It has clearly been tampered with as some stage as all I can see in the cavity bottom is a raw spring end. Removed both fixing screws but box still won't come out as the mentioned spring seems internally attached to both the box assembly and the film spindle! Am I missing some obvious step here? Please excuse my ignorance and lend me a helping hand.

I don't have a direct answer, but in my OM2S the battery terminal is a raw spring end, so yours may not have been tampered with.

Thank you, Rick, your comment is most reassuring. Isn't it unusual to find an example of Soviet practicality in a Japanese design? I'm still wiggling the battery chamber back and forth while trying to push the spring back through the hole. I am sure it will soon come out and, who knows, I may be this close to reviving the little thing.
