I just got hold of a late series Solinar Isolette II, and already have a Apotar Isolette III of the same series. Lens grafting is impossible for already discussed reasons (70 vs 80mm base length), but it seems as if it were possible to graft the entire Solinar III top with rangefinder onto the 75mm body - the dimensions would fit.
The biggest snag is that the base plate of the finder is fixed to the camera body with two rivets at the right hand side, so that I'll have to drill them out and replace the rivets with screws. Has anybody already taken apart a Isolette beyond that stage and can comment on risks and consequences? Do these rivets hold anything else in place?

Solinar vs. Apotar is 75 vs. 85mm focal length (and 5mm off either for the base length). 75mm vs. 80mm could just about work out, as my Solinar threads to about 3.5mm past infinity, and the last 1.5mm should be recoverable dropping all spacers and stripping the paint from the front plate - but no post-war Isolette has a 80mm lens/75mm depth, so that will have to remain theory...

That worked out pretty easy - after drilling off the top of the rivets the plate could be lifted, without affecting the riveting of the film transport. I then cut threads into the remaining rivet stumps and fixed the new plate with screws. |
