'Polished' alloy trim/parts tend to be lacquered or anodised. These finishes present a problem when you use abrasive polishes - if you partially rub off areas of the finish, the results will look even worse than the original uncleaned state. To 'refinish' anodised areas/parts, I used a mildly abrasive polish that is meant for polishing acrylic plastics. On discoloured lacquered alloy parts I always remove the lacquer, prior to polishing with paste metal polish and then protecting with an automobile wax polish. I do not use Brasso - it tends to 'stain' any leather/leatherette panels it comes in contact with. I use a chrome cleaner called 'Auto-Solvol', been around for years and any found on the trim panels can be easily removed with a soft tooth brush once it is dry. However before attacking the camera with abrasive polishes, try giving the areas a good rub up with a course cloth soaked in warm detergent. Surprising how skin oils plus dirt can contaminate the surface finish. |
