The Zeiss 50mm Planar is of beautiful construction.
When you remove the lens nameplate cone (unscrews with a rubber tool) and unscrew the topmost retaining ring you will be able to remove the entire optics group. Each element is separated by a precision distance ring so tip carefuly on to a table top and make sure the entire block of elements stays in its correct position. . You can then see into the back end of the lens mechanism for whatever reason you have to do so.

Hi there,

I'm new here, so please forgive my ignorance when it comes to forum protocol...

I have a Planar 1.4/50 HFT which arrived in a number of pieces (there are little springs and some screws in a separate baggie), and the diaphragm is stuck wide-open. Is this lens as easy to dismantle and repair as the 1.7, or am I looking for trouble?

I've previously taken apart and repaired a 3.5/135MC and 2.8/180 CZJ Sonnar, and have also converted permanently a number of (duplicate) Pentax SMC-M K lenses to Canon EOS mount, so am not completely useless when it comes to using my hands!!!

With thanks in advance and kind regards,

Mal
