I came across a camera of which I had never seen the brand before. It is a Canter 35mm camera. It was made in Japan I would guess in the late 1950's. Anyone know anything about this brand? Thanks...

Don't know anything except what it says in Sugiyama, which isn't 100% complete. Is it a fixed lens rangefinder with an f/2.8 lens? If so, you're correct, a late '50s camera made by Taiyo-do. It's called the Beauty Canter in the book.

The company appeared around 1949 and lasted about 10 years. Mostly made cameras named Beauty. Nice cameras. Good quality. Your lens is a 4 element Tessar copy.

This 1957 Canter Beauty (or Beauty Canter) was also available with a 45mm f2.0 and 45mm f1.9 as well as the f2.8. It was followed by the 1958 Beauty Super II with similar lens range. The f1.9 lenses for both of these had a ten blade aperture diaphragm (neat circular iris), and all used reliable Copal shutters. Have 3 of these with a couple of the later metered Lightomatic series. Found the earlier Canter and Super II to be great to use, good optics and dead reliable.

The thing to remember about Sugiyama/Naoi is that they listed cameras that were available in their home market, and didn't cover the world.

I appreciate this is a really late reply to an old post, but I want to offer two corrections. The f/2.8 lens on the Beauty Canter had five elements not four, and there wasn't an f/2 lens option for this particular model.
