I have an option to buy one of these but the meter is 3 stops off when fitted with a hearing aid battery.

Is calibration easy on these cameras. My repair skills are only slightly above non-existant.

The OM-1 meter is adjustable but I'm not sure of the maximum adjustment. For a newbie taking off the top cover can present some problems, you will need some tools. Also a standard light source is desirable to correctly recalibrate the meter.
Don't let this put you off, Tomosy's Book 1 covers the OM-1 and making a useable standard light source.
If you can get the camera cheaply it will be worth buying as you can use it with a hand-held lightmeter, and repair it when you get up to speed.

Two things to look at are: (1) Is the wire from the battery at the bottom of the camera to the meter at the top of the camera corroded? Very often it is. Poor or partial conductivity might be affecing the meter reading. (2) When you have the top of the camera off, remove all of the black foam from around the pentaprism. It often turns to goo with age and can damage the silvering on the prism. Start at http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/tutorials/OM-1CoverRemoval/, then follow the link at the bottom for the next section on removing the foam.
