Disassembly of the camera body on a Voigtlander Vitessa-T frequently leads to a loosened shutter mount cone, an aluminum casting attached to the die-cast camera body solely by a black light-sealing substance, the dried remains of which easily flakes off after 53 years of emplacement.
I have seen Vitessa-Ts on which the cones were resealed, with some sort of painted-on sealant.
What is the most suitable paintable substitute for the light sealant commonly available in the USA, that can be used directly on the cleaned aluminum surfaces without a primer? Lacquer? Shellac? Squirt-tube black silicone adhesive sealant?
The loose cones fit onto the camera body with about a millimeter of play vertical and horizontal play, enabling precise fit of the shutter mount box onto the cone. Which means that after the sealant is applied, and befores it dries and sets, the shutter mount box must be attached and screwed down to its permanent position. So an instant-dry epoxy or superglue could lock the cone into a slightly offcenter position, and thus render the shutter mounting box unmountable.
On the other hand, has anyone every tried using a paper gasket for the above purpose, cut out of an 8.5"x11" sheet of black art paper? |
