I spun the optics out of a Vivitar 2X-5 teleconverter without first making any reference marks. (dumb) How do I get them back in the right position for infinity focus etc? Thanks. |

Been there, done that.
Threads begin and end on the edges at more than one place. The proper one can only be found by trial and error.
Screw in the lens and mark exactly where it first catches. Or, unscrew the lens and mark where it leaves the other threads. If you go slowly and gently pull it will suddenly pop out, that is where to place a mark and put the lens back in on the correct thread.
There are only so many different places threads engage, so, try each one. |

If this is just a normal Vivitar 2x convertor, the optical cell is not screwed in via a multi-start thread. Just screw the cell in about mid way, attach to camera and then fit longest tele lens you have. Set lens on infinity and then point lens at a building that is at 'infinity'. You want a building or structure that has a clearly seen feature, ie windows, panels etc, check focus and keep screwing the cell in/out until you get sharp focus - using a tripod will make the adjustment much easier. When you get proper focus, remove the lens and run some nail varnish or cellulose paint into the threads in a couple of places and leave to dry. Then remove convertor and tighten up the grub screws or locking ring - which ever locking devise is used |

Check focus with more than one lens though: long teles will give you the best look, but some of them will focus past infinity, so if you set the TC to stop at infinity on that lens it won't reach infinity on another one. |

Another potential way around this is focusing, again, with a tele, to a suitable distance, where focusing forwards or backwards will bring other things into focus other than what was intended. The side of a building with multiple flag posts, etc., side by side work nicely.
Focus, then use tape, etc. to secure the focus ring into place and then go along with focusing it into the same spot with the TC.
