Lower mirror is shattered behind lens.
Several shards are still glued to the metal hinged mirror plate.
Should I try to remove this hinged plate with shards entirely from camera and replace mirror glass (if so, what's the process?), or leave it in the camera and try to remove mirror shards only, then glue in a new mirror?
Finally, where can I find a replacement mirror glass to match original, or will I need to cut a new one to fit?
All help appreciated! |

You only need to replace the mirror itself. Canon AE-1 is a very popular camera, and you should not have any problems finding a used one for parts (I know, I got about 50 of them). |

All things considered...you may be able to ebay a body that works for $25-30. I got one a couple weeks ago,with lens and flash for about $25 + ship.
It needed a battery and 2 screws on the baseplate are missing so I'm strip some from a dead camera.
Then your broke mirror Canon becomes the parts backup. |

Do you know what broke the mirror? It's possible that the supporting plate could have been damaged in the process. If it were me, I'm not sure that I wouldn't take Rembrant's advice and keep this camera for spare parts to support a replacement. |
