I have a minolta x-700 w/a problem - will not cock or release shutter - serial number starts w/12 - I am not camera friendly - is there a recommended shop/service center that will repair fairly and reasonably?

First check your battery and battery compartment. Clean all the metal parts that touch the battery (lighter fluid or rubbing alcohol) and insert new battery.

If it doesn't work after that try SPTS (http://www.spts.com/).

If Tom's advice doesn't work but produces lights in the viewfinder, there is still hope that you can do this yourself.

Let us know.

That is right. These cameras have a capacitor that fails. One on the bottom of the camera and one on top. Change them and it usually fixes the problem. Link to parts source: http://www.micro-tools.com/store/SearchByKeyword.aspx?word=minolta

An s/n that low usually doesn't have capacitor problems, but anything can happen - there are XG-Ms that have cap problems so it's not unheard of.
