I have another estate sale find here. It's a Rolleiflex 2.8D Planar (picked up for $200). The camera is in great shape cosmetically. The only issue is that the film counter doesn't count. The winder works great, though.
It has what looks like a Rolleikin knob on the side (see photo). Perhaps this may be a part of the problem?
I can rotate the gear inside the back and that makes the counter move forward but it doesn't actuate when film is loaded and the back is closed.
Any suggestions?

The Rolleikin counterknob is fully unrelated to 120 film use. The film counter starts counting when the mechanism that detects the film is actuated. This leaves two options: Either you loaded the film incorrectly (not under the roller) or the mechanism is out of adjustment. |

I know I am loading the film correctly. I have a few other Rolleiflex cameras that I use often. If the mechanism is out of adjustment, would that mean that gear-looking rod on the top of the back is not set correctly? |

No, it probably means that the arm where the roller (the one under the one that the film goes underneath) sits on, does not trigger the countermechanism. It is adjustable and can be reached from the side. Which sounds easy but is not, you have to take the lever and the side panel off.
as an afterthought,
The counter resets when the back is closed after you have wound the counter forward over the knurled wheel? If you have a Rolleicord or Rolleiflex T back on a Rolleiflex the countermechanism also does not work if I remember correctly. |

I think what Lucas is trying to be sure of is that you are inserting the film leader between the two chrome rollers at the bottom of the camera. The thickness of the film is what signals the camera there is 120 film loaded, and these rollers detect that. |

I thought that may be the case. I got it to work by playing that roller mechanism for a while. Hopefully it stays working. Perhaps it was a roll that was not triggering the counter roller properly. I hope that was the case.
